The Savannah Riverkeeper: A Network of Environmental Advocates

To address the many environmental problems facing the Savannah River, concerned citizens came together and formed the Savannah Riverkeeper. The organization is modeled on Waterkeeper programs for the Upper Chattahoochee, the Altamaha, and the Catawba rivers; in fact, these groups form a regional network with a common purpose of preventing water pollution. Effects of pollution indeed spread far downstream, impacting a huge area and every living thing on or near the river.

The Savannah Riverkeeper's role as advocate for water quality is twofold:

  • Stop polluters from dumping waste in our rivers and streams, where it not only pollutes but becomes a burden to the public's health and economy.
  • Monitor our waterways and watershed with a vigilance not possible by the (underfunded) government agencies charged with protecting natural resources
