Savannah Riverkeeper will be offering Adopt-a-Stream (AAS) workshops on Saturday September 18 and Saturday September 25, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each Saturday. Both workshops will be held at the Spirit Creek Educational Forest in south Richmond County and will be facilitated by state certified trainers Frank Carl and Sam Booher. The workshops are free but we ask that participants register so that we know how many to expect. To register call or email Frank Carl (frankcarl@knology.net, 706-364-5253) by September 16.
On the 18th the workshop will include an introduction to AAS and biological and visual monitoring of your stream. Participants will learn about the statewide AAS program, how it works and what it offers by way of tools and training for monitoring the health of your favorite stream. You will walk through a visual inspection of Spirit Creek and learn how to collect and identify a representative sample of macroinvertebrates from the stream. Bring hip waders if you have them.
On the 25th the workshop will include monitoring chemical, physical and bacterial parameters of the stream. Participants will learn about bacterial and nutrient pollution, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH and how to measure each. Hands on experience will be provided. Bring hip waders if you have them.
A test for certification for biological monitoring will be administered after the workshop on the 18th those wishing to become certified biological monitors. For those taking the test, it is recommended that you study the macroinvertebrates on the website at www.georgiaadoptastream.org (First click on the AAS logo, then on Materials and Resources on the horizontal menu and finally on macroinvertebrates on the drop down menu). Take your pick of the resources available.
Tests for chemical and bacterial certification will be given on the 25th to those wishing to be certified in these areas. |
