Eliminate Mercury Pollution Please print out section below and sign:

I urge you to make a shift to mercury-free technology at your chlorine plants in Tennessee and Georgia. As you know, mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin that can cause serious birth defects and disabilities in children, and a range of health effects in adults. Olin’s chlorine plants in Tennessee and Georgia are the #1 and #2 greatest sources of mercury pollution in their states, respectively. A shift to readily available mercury-free chlorine production technology will reduce mercury releases to the environment, protect public health, and even save Olin money in energy costs. Follow the lead set by the majority of the industry, and make the transition to mercury-free technology at both of these plants.

Petition ISSUE: Navigational Access to Uchee Creek REGION: Evans, Georgia (Columbia County, near Augusta). Go from Riverside Boat Ramp (near Riverside Elementary School on Hardy McManus Road) in Evans, Georgia, up the Little River (toward Clarks Hill Dam) to the mouth of Uchee Creek. For map see URL below. DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Historically Uchee Creek and the natural lake just upstream from the mouth of the creek have been accessible from Little River by water. That access is currently blocked by a three to five foot wide rock dam and a blue PVC pipe that appears to be a sewage pipeline. The dam and the pipeline were installed the latter part of 2003 and early 2004. Some of the dam was recently removed leaving the PVC pipe exposed and unprotected creating the potential for the pipe to be damaged, which could result in sewage contaminating both waterways. Even though some of the rocks have been removed access is still blocked by large rocks and the PVC pipeline, limiting boat access to Uchee Creek and the natural lake. It has also been noted that very muddy water flows into the Little River after rains, probably due to construction along Uchee Creek. The sediment resulting from this erosion will adversely affect both fish reproduction and food sources for fish, thereby decreasing the local fish populations. This waterway has historically been used by fishermen, boaters, kayakers, birdwatchers, and others who enjoy the outdoors. PETITION: We the undersigned request that the public waterway entrance into Uchee Creek be returned to normal by removing all the large rocks in the waterway, and repositioning the PVC pipe so the waterway can be enjoyed as it was in the past. The public should be free to enjoy the waterway as far as a boat can go. The entrance to Uchee Creek should be cleared and opened to the public immediately. And immediate steps should be taken to minimize the erosion caused by land clearing activities to minimize the adverse effects that the resulting sediment has on the fish populations.
