Help the Environment - Be an Advocate for Water Quality!
The Savannah Riverkeeper has many accomplishments to its credit, but it takes an army of volunteers to fight the good fight! Which of these environmental issues do you feel strongly about?
Water Quality Monitoring/Cleanups: We probably have the largest number of volunteers actively monitoring water quality and performing cleanups throughout the year in the entire Augusta area, in addition to where the Savannah River meets the coast near Savannah, Georgia.
Training: Working with people in the community who want to become leaders in monitoring water quality and in preventing excessive soil erosion into our waterways.
Mercury Contamination: We spearheaded efforts to first quantify the mercury levels in our water, then the campaign to plug the major sources of mercury contamination. There has been progress, but it is slow. Through years of working with the government and industry our staff have become authorities on the subject.
Permits: Enforcing Clean Water Act laws was the central objective of the original Riverkeeper movement. We cannot sit back and expect government agencies to do all that is needed to prevent water pollution. Placing blame is not nearly as effective as participating and working in the public's behalf.

Teenkeepers Program: Savannah Riverkeeper will be offering 40 middle school students to participate in a two-day trip down the beautiful River - having the opportunity for some of the local youth to experience a side of science they likely have never seen before. Joining us for this trip will allow students to participate in hands on field work which will allow them to experience science outside of the classroom. With the primary focus of this program being science education, each student will also learn about Georgia history, practice sketching, work on composition skills and much more! After going through the two-day trip, your students will undoubtedly become more engaged and productive citizens.
With only 40 spots available, seats are filling up fast! We recommend that you reserve your student's spot today or contact us for more details. Just tell us that you are interested in the Teenkeepers program and a staff member will reply within 24-48 hrs. |
