SHMP (Savannah Harbor Modification Project) Working Group |
Since 2001, Savannah Riverkeeper has worked to protect the lower Savannah River Basin, but new harbor development plans pose major challenges. These include deepening and widening the river, building a large shipping terminal, and either replacing the Talmadge Bridge or constructing a tunnel. Unfinished promises from past expansions, along with ongoing industrial growth—like the Hyundai Metaplant and supporting infrastructure—add to the complexity.
To ensure community voices are heard, Savannah Riverkeeper formed a Working Group with representatives from local governments, nonprofits, businesses, and legal groups. The group meets monthly to assess how these projects impact the river, nearby communities, and the environment. |
