1. We are working with local government in Tallulah Falls to help find an alternative to a risky, precedent-setting interbasin transfer that would take water from the Savannah River basin and discharge it into the Chattahoochee. ​
2. In 2015 a Kinder Morgan pipeline spilled over 300,000 gallons of gasoline into Broadway Creek in Belton, SC. We filed a Clean Water Act suit against KM in 2017 to clean up their contamination, which is ongoing to this day.
3. SRK has certified instructors on our staff and board for Georgia Adopt-A-Stream's statewide program. They train citizen volunteers in chemical and bacterial water quality monitoring so they can keep and eye on pollution in their local waterways.
4. Land application of sewage and animal processing remnants is permitted in Georgia. However, loopholes in the law create a nightmare for those living downstream of these facilities, like Broad River Valley Farms. SRK has worked for years to hold them accountable for their mess.
5. Veterans for Clean Water is a veteran-led group of volunteers testing water quality at more than 22 sites in Augusta's River Region, or the CSRA. This new program connects our mission of ensuring swimmable, fishable, drinkable water with an opportunity for veterans to gain on-the-water experience and training in the sciences.
6. SRK’s cleanup program is thriving, not only in Augusta, Georgia, but all over the watershed. This year alone, nearly 300 SRK volunteers have removed 17,000 lbs. of trash and 400 tires from our community and waterways.
7. With our Rock the Dam campaign, SRK advocates for the replacement of the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam with a rock weir that would be compatible with designs for a whitewater center. This project, along with efforts to replace defunct facilities on industry row with non-polluting enterprises, would usher in a new economic mix for the area while respecting our most vital resource.
8. The Lower Savannah River Alliance, an affiliate organization of SRK, was founded over 15 years ago in Allendale, SC to leverage the amazing natural resources of the rivers and swamps in the bi-state, seven-county area. Their mission focuses on promoting ecotourism and education as an economic driver.
9. SRK is the official non-federal sponsor for the Savannah River Cutoff Bends Below Augusta restoration study and task force. This effort, to re-introduce the natural riverbends or “oxbows” that were straightened for commerce nearly a century ago, will be the largest river restoration project in U.S. history, and will offer great improvements in water quality.
10. In Effingham County, hundreds of miles of rural roads were discovered to have been paved with potentially toxic coal ash waste. We worked alongside fellow Ogeechee Riverkeeper to offer well testing for residents and to urge the county to remediate the roads.
11. The Savannah Harbor is the nation’s fourth-busiest seaport, and the work of dredging the harbor to allow larger container ships brings massive damage to the ecosystem. In 2015 we settled with the Corps of Engineers on protections that can mitigate some of those effects. We continue to be involved with the Corps and Georgia Ports Authority every step of the way, working to ensure the mitigation projects are implemented and work as they should.
12. ​Offshore drilling is among the greatest threats to our environment, economy, and way of life on Georgia and South Carolina coast. We work with conservation partners in both states to educate our lawmakers on the risk of oil spills and other hazards from on-and-offshore infrastructure associated with drilling, and ensure the Atlantic remains off the table for oil exploration.
